Choosing a 3rd party inspection company is one of the most consequential decisions on a capital project. The right partner protects your investment. The wrong one gives you false security with boilerplate reports.
Certifications: Table Stakes
Verify CWI, API 510/570/653, and NACE/AMPP certifications. These are minimum qualifications — every credible firm has them.
What Actually Differentiates
- Team continuity: Same inspector start to finish, or rotating substitutes?
- Documentation quality: Ask for sample reports and turnover packages
- Responsiveness: Can they mobilize within 48-72 hours?
- Independence: Any business relationships with the EPC contractor?
- Bundled capability: QC + CM + Safety as a package, or inspection-only?
Questions to Ask
- How many similar projects completed in the last 12 months?
- Who specifically will be assigned to my project?
- What is your mobilization timeline?
- Can you provide owner/operator references?
- Are you ISNetworld or Avetta registered?
Red flags: Firms competing primarily on price, can't name the assigned inspector, or describe their service as 'staffing.' You're not hiring a body — you're hiring a quality partner.
